They trained her for a war. She intends to end it.
I don’t *do* this sort of book. The fantasy, gods, warrior woman, type of thing. But I’ve been desperate to read this after seeing such rave reviews from others who don’t *do* fantasy books.
Meet Rin. Rin is a war orphan being raised by foster parents who don’t really want her. On the verge of being sold to a man 3-times her age, she strikes a bargain with her foster parents – let her study for and sit the Keju exam and if she passes then they must let her go. Fail and she marries her unwanted suitor.
The Keju is the test that determines who goes to the Academies. The best of the best go to Sinegard, the elite Military academy… of course Rin ends up there.
During her time at the academy she meets a whole host of people who shape her knowledge and character – my favourite being her opium addled tutor. Following the country’s fall into War, her studies are cut short and she must fight alongside her classmates, teachers and members of the militia.
Rin holds a talent none of her peers have however… she can channel a God. Handy!
The Poppy War is a modern historical fantasy. With dark humour throughout, witty and likeable characters and amazing battle scenes it makes for a hugely enjoyable book. It is pretty grizzly in aces though, be warned.
As the first of a trilogy it’s an epic start and I cannot wait for the second instalment!
This is now on my ‘want to own’ list.

I borrowed this book from my local library. I had to request they stock this book as they didn’t already have it. I hope many others enjoy reading it in the Aberdeen area!
