The Hunting Party – Lucy Foley

This post should be an ARC Review (Advance Review Copy for the uninitiated amongst you, I know there are a few non-book bloggers who read me *waves*). But, true to form I put off reading this for months and months, right up until the release date. Then read it in 2 sittings. Pretty normal for me…

Anyhoo… The Hunting Party is your standard ‘Whodunnit’. And I don’t mean standard in a bad way by any means. This book was such a good read! It really does keep you guessing right until the end and it’s not who you think! Plenty of red-herrings and dead ends and a very satisfying ending.

The story is this: a group of friends have their annual New Year get together, friends since University and now all growed up with spouses, children and proper jobs, they get together at an exclusive Scottish hunting lodge. The description of the lodge, its loch, the mountains, buildings and surrounding area really sets the scene of the whole novel – very atmospheric, very spooky. Mr Blanket-Fort and I got married in an old hunting lodge, beside a loch, in the middle of nowhere so it was really easy for me to picture the scene.

Moving back and forth over 3 days from 30th December 2018 to the 2nd January 2019 it tells the story of the death of one of the group. Here’s the best bit tho… the voices from 2018 are only from the friends in the hunting party and the voices in 2019 are from the staff of the lodge. It’s so clever, very well written and completely gripping.

The book isn’t perfect, but what book is? There are at least 3 too many characters in it in my opinion- they could be lifted out and not really affect the story at all. The book also flits between being in the 1st and 3rd person which can get a bit confusing. Other than that, I really enjoyed this one and wish I hadn’t put off reading it for so long!

It’s out now – get your copy here.
