She Was The Quiet One – Michele Campbell

“For Rose Enright, enrolling in a prestigious New England boarding school is the opportunity of a lifetime. But for Rose’s vulnerable twin sister Bel, Odell Academy is a place of temptation and danger. When Bel falls in with a crowd of wild rich kids who pressure her into hazing Rose, the sisters’ relationship is shattered. Rose turns to her dorm mother, Sarah Donovan, for advice. But Bel turns to Sarah’s husband Heath, a charismatic and ambitious teacher. Is Heath trying to help Bel or take advantage of her? In a world of privilege, seduction, and manipulation, only one sister will live to tell the truth.”

Having read Michele’s previous book “It’s Always the Husband” I was keen to read her latest. It’s again set at an elite boarding school, The Odell School, with a cast of geeks, posh totty and outcasts.

Bel and Rose Enright are twins, who having recently lost their mother, have been sent to Odell by their Grandmother.  Throughout the book their close relationship is alluded to but I never got the impression that they were EVER that close.  Bel is the beautiful, bohemian, rebel while Rose it the uptight, slightly mousy, swot.  Odell pushes a wedge between them which ultimately leads to one of them being murdered.

The story of Bel’s affair with English teacher Heath Donovan was good – his controlling behaviour towards her was quite uncomfortable to read only because it was so believable.  Heath’s wife Sarah, I think, was incredibly well written – the wife who sees all the signs of an affair yet chooses to turn a blind eye in an attempt to save her marriage… something which only helps lead to the death of one of the sisters.

I did enjoy this book, perhaps not as much as “It’s Always The Husband” though.  They are very similar stories in that you could pick up some of the characters and drop them in the other book without too much trouble. Darcey/ Kate; Bel/ Aubrey; Rose/ Jenny.
A 4 star read… a good story but kind of forgettable.

“She Was the Quiet One” is published on the 31st July 2018 by St Martin’s Press.

About the Author – From Goodreads

Michele Campbell is a graduate of Harvard College and Stanford Law School and a former federal prosecutor in New York City who specialized in international narcotics and gang cases.

A while back, she said goodbye to her big-city legal career and moved with her husband and two children to an idyllic New England college town a lot like Belle River in IT’S ALWAYS THE HUSBAND. Since then, she has spent her time teaching criminal and constitutional law and writing novels.

She’s had many close female friends, a few frenemies, and only one husband, who – to the best of her knowledge – has never tried to kill her.
