Don’t Wake Up – Liz Lawler

Don’t Wake Up
Published: 18/05/17
Alex Taylor wakes up tied to an operating table. The man who stands over her isn't a doctor. The choice he forces her to make is utterly unspeakable. But when Alex re-awakens, she's unharmed - and no one believes her horrifying story. Ostracised by her colleagues, her family and her partner, she begins to wonder if she really is losing her mind. And then she meets the next victim

I picked up this book second hand at a charity shop a couple of weeks ago. Having previously heard of the publisher, twenty7, I was keen to read something by one of their debut authors.  With the bold claim of “Over 400 5* reviews from real readers” stamped on the front I had high hopes for ‘Don’t Wake Up’.  I wasn’t disappointed...

The story follows Dr Alex Taylor who has experienced a truly terrifying ordeal.  Alex wakes up naked, strapped to an operating table and with drips and ventilators attached to her before being knocked out again by a man dressed as a surgeon.  Waking up later fully clothed in the hospital car park with no evidence of any surgical procedure having been carried out, Alex must convince the police, her family, her friends, and in the end herself that something happened to her.

This book is gripping from the first to the last page.  It’s believable and I found myself wondering if the whole thing could actually happen.  Each situation that Alex finds herself in only makes her look more crazy and more guilty to the police officers investigating her.

It’s a really satisfying read with every single loose end tied up and the twist is simply brilliant.

Loved this book and will be looking out for more from Liz Lawler.

An utterly excellent 5 stars!
