I’m not sure how Anne has enough hours in the day sometimes… thank you again for having me on another Random Things Tour! This time we have Hidden in the Shadows by Imogen Matthews!
Escape from the hidden village is just the beginning
September 1944: The hidden village is in ruins. Stormed by the Nazis. Several are dead and dozens flee for their lives.
Instead of leading survivors to safety, Wouter panics and abandons Laura, the love of his life. He has no choice but to keep running from the enemy who want to hunt him down.
Laura must also stay hidden as she is Jewish. Moving from one safe house to another, she is concealed in attics and cellars. The threat of discovery is always close at hand.
On the run with no end in sight, the two young people despair of ever seeing each other again.
As cold sweeps in signalling the start of the Hunger Winter, time is running out.
Wouter’s search now becomes a battle for survival.
Where can Laura be? Will they ever be reunited?
Hidden in the Shadows is an unforgettable story of bravery and love, inspired by historical events.
Online Blanket Fort Review
What an absolutely lovely, heartwarming and inspiring wee book!
Not my usual read but on a whim I agreed to read and review Hidden in the Shadows.
Hidden in the Shadows is the sequel to The Hidden Village. I believe The Hidden Village was the story of the construction of Berkenhout, a hidden camp in Holland to conceal and keep Jews safe during WW2. If you like to read stories from this time period I’d definitely recommend reading The Hidden Village first – I didn’t and I wish I had. Nothing was taken from my enjoyment of Hidden in the Shadows but I would love to have known more about Berkenhout.
Hidden in the Shadows begins with a raid on Berkenhout by Nazi soldiers. All of the residents flee and scatter in every direction – the story follows Wouter on his search for Laura, the woman he loves.
Taking the reader through the history of WW2 and the effect it had on people in Holland, Hidden in the Shadows is a completely engaging read.
Although it’s not a ‘true story’ as such, the story does convey the utter destruction of war in addition to how people, regardless of religion, will pull together to protect those most in need.
Hidden in the Shadows is a lovely yet heartbreaking story of lost love, friendship and trust during WW2.
